UPEK, Inc. Selected By AlwaysOn as Top 100 Private Company Award Winner

UPEKBERKELEY, Calif. — June 28, 2005— UPEK, Inc., the leader in biometric fingerprint security, today announced that it has been chosen by AlwaysOn as one of the Top 100 Private Company award winners for 2005. UPEK was handpicked by the AlwaysOn editorial team based on a set of five criteria – innovation, market potential, customer adoption, media buzz and investor value creation .

The AO 100 was selected from over 1,000 companies, peer-nominated by leading venture capitalists, investment bankers and industry analysts. The AO 100 consists of private companies at all stages of development, from early to late stage.

UPEK was founded in March 2004 following its spin-off from STMicroelectronics. Prior to that it had operated as an internal business division of STMicroelectronics since 1999. The company’s TouchChip® and TouchStrip™ fingerprint authentication sensors have been shipping in quantity since 1999, and customers include Lenovo, Samsung, SanDisk, LaCie, Fujitsu, Symbol and Brinks.

“The AO 100 companies are shaping today’s web-driven, connected environment,” said Tony Perkins, founder and editor of AlwaysOn. “We were inundated with nominations from leading companies, many of which I hope will appear on our list next year. My congratulations to each AO 100 winner – these are the companies which we predict will have the greatest market traction, strongest innovation and most game-changing approaches this year.”

“We’re honored to be receiving this recognition, which we believe reflects our leadership in a rapidly growing market,” noted Greg Goelz, UPEK’s vice president of marketing. “Biometric security is quickly being adopted as a convenient means of securing Wireless and corporate networks. Since manufacturers are new to integrating this technology, they are looking for experience and market leadership to help them integrate biometric security into broader security architectures. Rather than just selling components, UPEK collaborates with customers in integrating our end-to-end solutions, and this approach has attracted customers who are leaders in their markets.”

The AO 100 will be honored at the AO2005: Innovation Summit at a VIP reception at 5:00 PM on July 19, 2005 at the Frances C. Arrillaga Alumni Center on the Stanford University campus in Palo Alto, California.
