Dr. Ronald D. Black
UPEK CEO
Chairman of the Board, Chairman M&A Committee
Dr. Black is the CEO and Chairman of UPEK and currently sits on the boards of UPEK, Heptagon, and Inside Contactless. Previously, he was chief executive officer of Wavecom, a publicly traded French wireless solutions company. Dr. Black has also served in a number of senior executive roles at other companies including: executive vice president of the Client Systems Group at Agere Systems, vice president and general manager of the Next-Generation Networks Business Unit at Gemplus (now Gemalto), general manager of the Communications Systems Division of Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector (now Freescale), and a number of senior management positions at IBM Microelectronics in its Power PC Microprocessors group and its Electronic Packaging Applications and Development groups. He holds a Bachelor of Science, a Masters of Science, and a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.
Alan Kramer
UPEK Founder, President, COO Board Member
Mr. Kramer is the founder, a board member, president and COO of UPEK. He served as CEO from the company's launch as a venture-backed spin-off from STMicroelectronics in 2004 until 2009.
Prior to leading the spin-off of UPEK, he was a vice president of STMicroelectronics and director of its TouchChip business unit, where he pioneered the silicon fingerprint sensor business within the company. Before establishing and directing that business unit, Mr. Kramer directed the Innovative Systems Design Group within the Central Research Division of ST. Prior to that, he worked as a researcher at both AT&T Bell Labs and Intel, where he was an early pioneer in the fields of neural networks, analog computing, and adiabatic computing. In the early phase of his career, he worked as an engineer at Hewlett-Packard where he developed software for computer-aided-design of integrated circuits. Mr. Kramer attended graduate school at the UC Berkeley department of electrical engineering and computer sciences, where he focused on neural networks and analog computing and during which time he was awarded both a Robert Noyce Memorial Fellowship from Intel and a Hewlett-Packard Fellowship from Hewlett-Packard. He holds a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from Yale University and has more than 50 patents obtained while with ST, Bell Labs, Intel and UPEK.
Dr. Alan Baratz Board member
Dr. Baratz has served on UPEK's board since 2008. He joined Avaya in October 2008 as senior vice president and president of Global Communications Solutions. In this capacity, he is accountable for the full life cycle of the company's Intelligent Communications products; including all activity supporting innovation, design, development, business model/pricing, and delivery of Avaya's product offerings. His organization includes the company's three strategic business units: Unified Communications, Contact Center, and Small/Medium Enterprise Communications. Before joining Avaya, Alan was most recently the senior vice president for Cisco's Network Software and Systems Technology Group. In this role, he was responsible for Cisco's core software organization, comprising more than 2,400 software developers and supporting more than $20B of network product sales. Previously, Alan served as President of Sun Microsystems' Software division, with responsibility for all of Sun's software products (including Solaris and Java) as well as software sales and software marketing. He has also held leadership positions at IBM and served as CEO of several information technology startups, as well as partner and advisor to several venture capital and private equity firms. Alan holds both a doctorate and a master's degree in computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a bachelor's degree in mathematics and computer science from UCLA.
David Lane Chairman Audit Committee Board Member
Mr. Lane is a general partner at ONSET Ventures specializing in the area of IT. Serving on UPEK's board of directors since 2004, he also is a board member of Truviso and Vindicia. Prior to joining ONSET, he was a founding managing director at Diamondhead Ventures where he led the firm's investments in Danger (acquired by Microsoft), Entercept Security Technologies (acquired by McAfee), Truviso and UPEK. Prior to joining Diamondhead Ventures, Mr. Lane was a senior investment officer at the Harvard Management Company. He previously worked in sales at the IBM Corporation. Mr. Lane earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California and a Masters of Business Administration from the Harvard Business School.
Roland Manger Board Member
Mr. Manger is a co-founder and managing partner of Earlybird Venture Capital. In addition to serving on the board of directors at UPEK, he is currently on the boards of Myriad Software Group AG (Zurich), OneShield Inc. (Cambridge, MA) and Scoreloop AG (Munich). Mr. Manger was a board member of abaXX Technology AG, where he was closely involved in its sale to Cordys and Esmertec AG. He was a marketing and business development executive at Cybernet AG, a provider of internet and system integration services, which was subsequently listed on NASDAQ and the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and later sold to PSINet and at Ditec AG, where he served as director of business development. He has also worked as a strategy consultant and principal with Gemini Consulting in the telecom and media industries. He studied business, operations research and computer science at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, graduating with a Dipl. Wi-Ing. degree and obtained a masters of business administration from Georgetown University in Washington D.C.
Pier Angelo Martinotti Board Member
Mr. Martinotti has served on UPEK's board of directors since March 2004 and has also served on the boards of other technology companies, including Accent, Media Lario, and Sensitive Object. He is currently a consultant to Sofinnova Partners in France. From 2002 through 2005, Mr. Martinotti was an advisor to STMicroelectronics. Between 1986 and 2002, Mr. Martinotti served in various roles within STMicroelectronics. Most recently, from 1994 to 2002, he served as corporate vice president and general manager of the New Ventures Group of STMicroelectronics. Mr. Martinotti earned a Master of Science degree in electronic engineering from the Politecnico of Turin, Italy. He has also completed financial courses at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France and at IMEDE in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Dr. Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli

Dr. Sangiovanni-Vincentelli is a co-founder of SDA Systems, Inc., a predecessor of Cadence Design Systems where he serves as board of directors member and chairman of the Technology Committee of the Board. He serves also as member of the Science and Technology Advisory board of General Motors and as member of the Technical Advisory Council of United Technologies Corporation. He has been a professor of electrical engineering and computer sciences at the University of California at Berkeley since 1976, where he holds the Edgar L. & Harold H. Buttner Chair of Electrical Engineering. In 1998, Dr. Sangiovanni-Vincentelli was elected to the National Academy of Engineering and, in 2001, he was honored by the Electronic Design Automation Consortium with the Kaufman Award, honoring an individual who has contributed to creating or driving technological advances that have had measurable impact on the productivity of design engineers. In 2008, he was awarded the IEEE/RSE Wolfson James Clerk Maxwell Medal “for groundbreaking contributions that have had an exceptional impact on the development of electronics and electrical engineering or related fields” . In 2009, he received the first ACM/IEEE A. Richard Newton Technical Impact Award in Electronic Design Automation to honor persons for an outstanding technical contribution within the scope of electronic design automation and an honorary doctorate by the University of Aalborg in Denmark. A fellow of the IEEE, he graduated summa cum laude with a doctor of engineering degree from Politecnico di Milano Technical University in Milan, Italy.
Jean Schmitt Chairman Compensation Committee Board Member
Mr. Schmitt has served on UPEK's board of directors since March 2004. In December 2001, he joined Sofinnova Partners SA, where he currently serves as managing partner and focuses on opportunities in the telecommunications and consumer electronics industries. Prior to joining Sofinnova Partners SA, Mr. Schmitt was the chief executive officer and founder of SLP InfoWare, a world leader in predictive customer relationship management software for the telecommunications industry, which was sold to Gemplus International S.A. in 2000. After the acquisition, Mr. Schmitt was the chairman and chief executive officer of SLP InfoWare and vice president of the Telecommunication Solutions and Applications group at Gemplus until November 2001. He is a guest lecturer at Telcom Paris and serves as a director of MYRIAD AG (SIX:MYRN), Sagem Wireless, Accent, Blyk and Celsius.
Mr. Schmitt graduated with honors from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications, or ENST, in Paris, France, and earned a post-graduate degree in artificial intelligence from ENST. |
